Together We Can
Flex Calendar Information

We at Forest City – Dunbar will be continuing our flex or year-round calendar.  The Rutherford County Board of Education has approved for our school to adopt this style of calendar.

Some of the key points to understand with the calendar are:

  • Students attend school the same number of days as the traditional calendar (180 days).
  • There will be four 9-week grading periods instead of the traditional six 6-week grading periods.
  • Students will have approximately 3 weeks off between grading periods, with a slightly longer break at the end of the school year.  This time is essentially the “summer” break spread out over different times in the calendar year.
  • We believe that shorter breaks will lead to more consistency with student learning and less loss of learning that we often see after a long summer break.
  • Most of the holidays and workdays between August 25 and June 10 are aligned with the traditional calendar that will be followed by the other schools in the district.
  • The school year ends on the same date that the traditional school calendar ends for the rest of the district.
  • The week of spring break will be aligned with the traditional calendar’s spring break.

We understand that this will be an adjustment for our families.  However, our faculty and staff are excited about the potential this calendar will have on the learning outcomes of our students.  Other schools that have made the transition to this style of calendar have had highly favorable support from parents once the change was made.

Thank you for your support as we continue to provide the best learning environment possible for your child.
